Introducing the Working Motherhood Initiative
As an African working mother, I wanted to share a message of hope and encouragement with others who might be going through their own struggles. I know first-hand the challenges that come with trying to balance work and motherhood, and I want you to know that you’re not alone. There have been times when I’ve felt like I wasn’t doing enough, like I was failing both at work and at home. But what I’ve come to realize is that perfection isn’t the goal. The goal is to do the best we can with what we have, and to show up for ourselves and our families every day.
Sometimes that means asking for help, whether it’s from a partner, a friend, or a coworker. Sometimes it means saying no to things that don’t align with our priorities, or setting boundaries to protect our time and energy. And sometimes it means giving ourselves grace, knowing that we're doing the best we can in a challenging situation.
But even in the midst of those challenges, there are moments of joy and triumph that make it all worth it. Seeing my children’s faces light up when I come home from work, or nailing a big project at work - those are the moments that keep me going, that remind me why I do what I do.
So to all the African working mothers out there, I want to say this: you are stronger than you think. You are capable of achieving great things, both in your career and in your family life. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it all, because you can.
And remember, it’s not about doing it all perfectly. It’s about doing the best you can with what you have, and being proud of the amazing things you're accomplishing every day.
I have started the Working Motherhood Initiative because I saw a gap in support and resources for African working mothers. It’s my way of contributing to Africa where mothers don't have to choose between a career and family but can thrive in both. It’s about creating a community where we can share resources, support each other, and advocate for policies that empower us. This initiative is more than just a platform; it's a movement towards changing how society values and supports African working mothers.
Join us and be part of the change for African working mothers everywhere.
